Heat vs. Timberwolves: Giannis and Bam Adebayo Avoid Injury Report Ahead of Opener

Heat vs. Timberwolves tips off tonight at Kaseya Center with Miami's two biggest names in good shape. Bam Adebayo is not listed on the Heat's injury report for the season opener, and Giannis Antetokounmpo is not among the players named on it. Center Vladislav Goldin is the only Heat player listed as questionable. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

For a team that went 43-39 last season and lost in the play-in tournament, a clean bill of health for the stars is the best possible start to a year built around Antetokounmpo. This is the latest Miami Heat news heading into Game 1 of 82.

Heat vs. Timberwolves injury report: who is and is not listed

According to The Athletic's Eric Nehm, as relayed by Hoops Hype, the Heat's report for the opener reads as follows:

  • Questionable: Vladislav Goldin (right ankle sprain)

  • Available: Myron Gardner (right ankle sprain) and Dru Smith (right calf strain)

  • Not listed: Pelle Larsson, who has been dealing with an illness

Fox Sports, citing RotoWire, noted that Adebayo (groin) is not on the report. Antetokounmpo (rest) had been expected to play, according to RotoWire, and his name does not appear in the report as relayed above. Injury reports can change before tip-off, so the official NBA report remains the final word.

Adebayo's return ends a preseason scare

Adebayo sat out the end of the preseason with right groin tightness. After returning to practice, he explained the caution in his own words. “Just play it smart,” he said, according to the Miami Herald as quoted by Bolavip. “Obviously, I want to be out there. But it’s one of those things where they tried to save me from myself.” He added that he should be ready to go Wednesday.

His availability matters on both ends. Adebayo averaged 20.1 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 32.4 minutes over 73 games last season, and he has posted regular-season averages of at least 18 points and nine rebounds in six straight years, per RotoWire. He is also the player Miami needs to make the Giannis pairing work, a question we explored in our season opener preview.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is set for his regular-season Heat debut

Antetokounmpo rested during Friday's preseason finale but is expected to be in the lineup tonight. In three preseason appearances he averaged 15.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists in just 18.6 minutes per game. His best night came in the 144-128 win over Brooklyn, when he finished with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, 15 rebounds, nine assists and three blocks in 24 minutes, one assist shy of a triple-double.

The workload question is real. Antetokounmpo played only 36 regular-season games for Milwaukee last season, according to Fox Sports. How coach Erik Spoelstra paces his minutes across 82 games is a storyline worth tracking from the first night. That is our read, not a Heat announcement. For more background, see our Giannis preseason report.

Backcourt depth: Dru Smith available, Pelle Larsson back

The most interesting rotation news is behind starting point guard Davion Mitchell. Smith missed the entire preseason with the calf strain, but RotoWire reports he is available and set to be the No. 2 point guard off the bench. Larsson averaged 11.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists across 70 games last season, 54 of them starts.

Larsson's illness cut short his appearance against these same Timberwolves on Oct. 10. “I tried to speed track last time against the Timberwolves and it didn’t work out, so we’ve been just taking our time,” he said, as reported by Heat Nation.

Rookie Ryan Conwell made his case with 21 points and seven assists in the preseason finale against Orlando, as we noted in our earlier coverage. With Smith and Larsson both healthy, Spoelstra has more options than expected, which makes Conwell's minutes harder to predict. Our breakdown of the Nick Richards roster decision covers another piece of the depth puzzle.

What Minnesota brings to Kaseya Center

The Timberwolves have their own reshuffled roster, with LaMelo Ball joining Anthony Edwards after Minnesota sent Naz Reid and Julius Randle out in the trade, according to Sports Illustrated. Edwards was reported by ESPN as expected to play after resting in the preseason. Bleacher Report lists Donte DiVincenzo (right Achilles tendon repair) as out, and RotoWire says big man Rocco Zikarsky is not on Minnesota's report.

Antetokounmpo has history in this matchup. He averaged 27 points on 65.6% shooting across his previous three games against Minnesota, per Sports Illustrated, while Rudy Gobert held Adebayo to 5-of-13 shooting over two games last season.

What the Heat vs. Timberwolves matchup will test

Two numbers frame the night. Miami played 24.9% of its possessions in transition last season, the highest rate in the 22 years of Synergy tracking, NBA.com reports. Minnesota is smaller after the Ball trade, so Miami's size and speed in the open floor is the obvious pressure point.

The other test is half-court shooting. Neither Antetokounmpo nor Adebayo is a consistent perimeter shooter, so Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bobby Portis will be asked to punish any zone or crowded paint. One game will not settle that debate, but it will offer the first real evidence.

What to watch next

  • The starting five: whether Spoelstra goes with Mitchell, Thompson, Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, as NBA.com projected.

  • Antetokounmpo's minutes and how he looks after resting the finale.

  • The guard rotation: who gets the first minutes off the bench among Smith, Larsson and Conwell.

  • Friday's home game against the Detroit Pistons, followed by a Saturday trip to Charlotte, the Heat's first back-to-back of the year.

The opener will answer some questions and raise others, and the next few days will show whether this lineup holds up.
