76ers Beat Knicks 106-100 on Ring Night in LeBron James' Debut

The 76ers beat Knicks 106-100 on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, spoiling the defending champions' ring ceremony and handing LeBron James and Jaylen Brown a winning debut in Philadelphia colors. The night began with a championship banner rising to the rafters. It ended with Tyrese Maxey scoring a game-high 28 points and a Sixers defense that locked in when it mattered most.

It was the kind of result that shapes the early-season conversation in the Eastern Conference. Add a stunning comeback by the Detroit Pistons in the afternoon opener and a statement win by the Oklahoma City Thunder in San Antonio, and the 2026-27 NBA season is already delivering. Here is what happened, why it matters and what to watch next.

How the 76ers Beat Knicks on Banner Night

New York opened the season as defending champions for the first time in 53 years. The Knicks raised their first championship banner since 1973 before tipoff, a reward for a run that ended with a five-game victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. The building was ready for a coronation. Philadelphia had other plans.

The Sixers erased a double-digit deficit and led by as many as nine early in the fourth quarter. Karl-Anthony Towns answered with a deep three-pointer that made it a one-point game with 4:37 remaining, and for a moment the familiar Knicks late-game magic seemed ready to appear. Instead, New York scored on just two of its final eight possessions, according to NBA.com's game analysis, and Philadelphia pulled away for the win.

Defense Closes the Door

The biggest question about this star-heavy roster was never whether it could score. It was whether it could defend. In the final minutes, the answer was yes. Brown switched onto Brunson and forced a tough turnaround jumper. When New York tried to hunt Joel Embiid in the pick-and-roll, he blitzed the screen and made Brunson give up the ball. James then rotated to take away Towns on the pop, and later slid over from the weak side to get a hand on a Mikal Bridges layup.

Maxey also turned a Knicks mistake into a dunk after intercepting an OG Anunoby pass, a play that put Philadelphia up six. The Sixers probably cannot defend with that kind of energy for 48 minutes every night, but on opening night they did not need to.

Maxey Leads a Balanced Star Attack

Maxey's 28 points led all scorers. Brown added 19, James had 14 and Embiid finished with 13, and each of the four stars recorded at least five assists. Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit key three-pointers off the bench, and VJ Edgecombe converted an important bucket after Towns pulled New York within two with 2:15 left.

Philadelphia also showed some creativity. The first play of the game was a Spain pick-and-roll variation that used Brown, Embiid and Maxey to screen for James, and it produced an open three for Maxey. With backup center Ariel Hukporti lost to a torn Achilles in the preseason and Adem Bona only just back, James even played a few minutes at center late in the second quarter, a lineup that could become a regular wrinkle this season.

Embiid's Quiet Offense, Loud Defense

Embiid's scoring night was rough. He made 4 of 15 shots and attempted only four free throws. But he impacted the game on the other end with two steals, three blocks and a recovery rejection of Andre Drummond. The Knicks scored 61 points on 72 possessions with Embiid on the floor, compared with 39 points on 31 possessions when he sat. New York also managed just five points on 14 ball-screen chances aimed at the player Embiid was guarding.

Why the Knicks Stumbled on Ring Night

Jalen Brunson led New York with 21 points, but he made only 6 of 19 shots and went 1-for-5 over the final five minutes. His three-point attempt with about 10 seconds left was an airball that sealed the loss, as reported by Yahoo Sports. The Knicks shot 42 percent from the field and 27 percent from three, committed 15 turnovers and scored 100 points on 102 possessions.

Towns finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds after a slow start that included early foul trouble. Josh Hart added 14 points and seven rebounds. Bridges, however, scored only four points in 33 minutes. Coach Mike Brown said his team looked like it was "running in mud," and Hart delivered a blunt message after the game: "We're 0-1," he said, and the team needs to play like it.

There is history in the sting, too. New York became the first home team to lose on ring night since the 2020 Lakers, who played in an empty arena during the pandemic. Before Tuesday, defending champions had gone 64-15 in their home openers. One loss in October does not define a season, but it does serve notice that the Sixers' new Big Four is a serious problem for the East.

Pistons Rally From 22 Down as Paul George Debuts for Boston

The day began with one of the wildest finishes of the opening slate. Detroit beat Boston 121-113 after trailing 72-50 in the third quarter. A 23-0 run in the fourth erased a double-digit Celtics lead, and the 22-point rally was the largest on the first day of a season since 1997-98, according to the NBA.

Jalen Duren scored 22 points with nine rebounds, Cade Cunningham had 22 points and eight assists, and Duncan Robinson scored 21. Javonte Green, who did not play in the first half, scored 19 points off the bench on five three-pointers. "When we outwork you, we're going to be hard to beat," coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.

Boston can take some positives from Paul George's debut. He scored 38 points on 12-of-21 shooting, including 7 of 12 from three, the most points ever scored in a Celtics debut. Jayson Tatum shot 6-for-23 and just 1-for-10 in the second half, but he handed out 11 assists.

Thunder Send a Message While Wembanyama Struggles

In the nightcap, Oklahoma City beat San Antonio 116-104 in a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points in 36 minutes, and Jared McCain added 20 points on 6-of-8 three-point shooting. Chet Holmgren and the Thunder defense frustrated Victor Wembanyama, who shot 1-for-13 with four turnovers, though he still blocked six shots. Rookie Aday Mara contributed seven points in 12 minutes in his NBA debut.

"This game really doesn't mean that much," Gilgeous-Alexander said afterward. Even so, the Thunder will take the early psychological edge in what looks like a rivalry that could define the West for years.

What NBA Fans Should Watch Next
