NBA Opening Night 2026: Tripleheader, New Faces and Storylines to Watch
Updated: 3 days ago
The countdown is almost over. NBA opening night arrives Tuesday, Oct. 20, and the league has stacked the evening with a first-ever Tip-Off tripleheader on NBC and Peacock. After a preseason finale full of comebacks, rookie flashes and a few jaw-dropping passes, the games finally count, and the biggest offseason moves get their first real test.
Here is a fan-friendly guide to the tripleheader, the blockbuster trades that reshaped the league, and the preseason takeaways that could matter once the real games begin.
NBA Opening Night 2026: The Tripleheader Schedule
NBC Sports says this is the first time a network has aired three NBA Tip-Off games on the same day. Here is the lineup, with all times Eastern:
3 p.m. Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons
7 p.m. Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks
9:30 p.m. Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs
NBC's NBA Showtime crew, led by host Maria Taylor with Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, will connect the games with coverage from Rockefeller Plaza and Madison Square Garden.
Celtics at Pistons: A Heavyweight Matinee
The opener pairs the top two teams in the East from the 2025-26 regular season, with Jayson Tatum and Cade Cunningham headlining the afternoon. Boston closed the preseason as the league's only undefeated team at 4-0 after a 125-120 overtime win over Philadelphia, fueled by a bench-led rally and 21 points from Hugo González. The Celtics also welcome Paul George, who arrived from the 76ers in the Jaylen Brown trade.
Detroit finished its exhibition slate with a 129-125 win over Toronto in a game that featured 18 lead changes. Cunningham looked comfortable with 18 points and seven assists, which is exactly what the Pistons want to see before a nationally televised matinee.
76ers at Knicks: Banner Night Meets the LeBron and Brown Era
The Knicks are the reigning NBA champions, and this game has been billed as Championship Banner Night at Madison Square Garden. The visitors are one of the most intriguing rosters in the league: LeBron James signed with Philadelphia in free agency, and Brown joined the team in that July trade with Boston.
The new-look Sixers got a long look at their potential in the preseason finale. Joel Embiid posted 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes, Tyrese Maxey added 22, and Brown chipped in 20 points and eight boards. James scored eight points and finished an alley-oop from Maxey early on. Philadelphia led by as many as 14 in the third quarter before Boston came back, a reminder that the rotation is still finding its rhythm.
Thunder at Spurs: Wembanyama and Gilgeous-Alexander Close the Night
The late game features Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs hosting Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder. San Antonio ended the preseason with a 126-97 rout of Sacramento in which all five starters scored at least 12 points, and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson added 15. Wembanyama, meanwhile, supplied one of the night's best highlights with a self alley-oop in transition.
Oklahoma City rested its starters for much of the preseason, which opened the door for rookies Aday Mara and Bennett Stirtz. Mara averaged 13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds. Stirtz made 15 of 31 three-pointers, a 48.4 percent clip that matters with Isaiah Joe and Lu Dort no longer in town. How much of that production carries into rotation minutes is one of the quieter storylines of opening night.
Offseason Blockbusters Reshape the Title Race
Few summers have moved this many stars. Within roughly ten days, four Finals MVPs changed teams: Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard and Jaylen Brown. Antetokounmpo was traded to the Miami Heat in a deal that sent Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis and draft capital to Milwaukee, while Bobby Portis went to Miami. LaMelo Ball landed in Minnesota, Ja Morant was traded to Portland, and Leonard was sent to Toronto.
Some of those moves already produced flashes. Herro scored 25 points in Milwaukee's 128-127 overtime win over Indiana, and Morant started for the Trail Blazers with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting alongside Damian Lillard's game-high 23. Preseason results are no guarantee of anything, but they offer an early sense of who is fitting in.
Preseason Finale Takeaways Worth Remembering
Rookies Who Made Noise
The top of the 2026 draft class stayed busy on the final night. No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa scored 12 points in 15 minutes for Washington before leaving late in the first half after rolling his ankle, so his status is worth monitoring. No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson scored six of his 13 points in the final five minutes to help Utah beat Phoenix 119-116, and he added six assists and six rebounds. No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer put up 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Memphis' win over Charlotte, and No. 4 pick Caleb Wilson delivered 16 points, seven boards and four assists for Chicago. Wilson averaged 15.8 points in the preseason, second among rookies.
Stars Who Looked Ready
Nikola Jokić delivered another behind-the-back highlight pass, finishing with eight assists as Denver beat the Lakers 121-106, and Jamal Murray led all scorers with 21. Luka Dončić scored 15 and Austin Reaves led Los Angeles with 19. In the Bay Area, Stephen Curry scored 20 points as Golden State beat Portland 128-118, with Brandin Podziemski and Yaxel Lendeborg adding 17 each and Draymond Green nearly recording a triple-double. Lendeborg is expected to see an expanded role while Jimmy Butler III recovers from injury.
Miami Heat Finalize Their Roster Before Wednesday's Opener
Miami's season begins one day after the tripleheader. The Heat waived Bez Mbeng, Kylor Kelley, Gabe Madsen and Eric Ausar, with the intention of sending them to the Sioux Falls Skyforce, which leaves the team with 14 players on standard contracts and three on two-way deals. Miami hosts Minnesota on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Kaseya Center.
Based on how coach Erik Spoelstra used his lineups in preseason games, the Heat appear set to start Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Andrew Wiggins, Klay Thompson and Davion Mitchell. Miami went 3-2 in the preseason and fell 136-115 to Orlando in the finale, a game in which Antetokounmpo rested and Adebayo missed out with a groin issue. One more roster decision remains: Nick Richards' contract becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the regular season.
What Fans Should Watch Next
With opening night three days away, keep an eye on these developments:
Dybantsa's ankle: Any update on the No. 1 pick before Washington's first game will shape the early-season outlook for the Wizards.
Roster cutdowns: Monday at 5 p.m. ET is the official opening-night roster deadline, so more waivers and claims could surface.
Sixers chemistry: Can LeBron, Brown, Embiid and Maxey share the ball against a champion on a loud Garden night?
Rookie roles: Peterson, Boozer, Wilson and Dybantsa will all start meaningful minutes, and the OKC rookies could earn rotation spots.
Heat debut: Giannis and Klay in Miami colors under the lights on Wednesday night.
The preseason is finished, the trades are digested, and the real standings begin Tuesday. With so many new faces and storylines, NBA opening night 2026 should set the tone for one of the most unpredictable seasons in years.
