Jalen Duren Leads Pistons Into NBA Opening Night Showdown With Celtics
Jalen Duren is back on the floor, and the timing could not be better for the Detroit Pistons. After a long contract standoff, a five-year, $200 million agreement and a 24-point preseason debut, the All-Star center now heads into Tuesday's NBA opening night with the Boston Celtics visiting Little Caesars Arena at 3 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
The matchup kicks off the league's first-ever season-opening tripleheader and pits the teams that posted the Eastern Conference's two best records a year ago. Here is where Duren, Detroit, Boston and the rest of the league stand just hours before the 2026-27 regular season tips off.
Jalen Duren Answers the Big Questions in Preseason Debut
On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Duren made his first appearance since Detroit's second-round exit against Cleveland, starting on the road against the Minnesota Timberwolves. In only 15 minutes he scored a game-high 24 points on 8-of-9 shooting, went a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line and added three rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block. Every point came before halftime, and he sat out the second half as the Pistons cruised to a 128-106 victory.
From Contract Standoff to Statement Game
The performance mattered because of what came before it. Duren missed the start of camp while he and the club worked through negotiations, and on Oct. 1 he agreed to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract, according to ESPN's reporting, to stay in Detroit. Last season he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds and earned his first All-Star and All-NBA recognition. His playoff showing against Orlando and Cleveland, however, fell short of expectations, which is why a sharp, efficient return carried extra weight.
Duren also had help around him. Cade Cunningham added 14 points and nine assists in 20 minutes, Duncan Robinson scored 15 points with four three-pointers, and John Collins chipped in 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Detroit moved to 2-1 in the preseason with the win.
How the Pistons Closed Out the Preseason
Detroit wrapped up its exhibition schedule on Friday, Oct. 16, with a 129-125 win over the Toronto Raptors, who rested their starters on the second night of a back-to-back. Cunningham led the way with 18 points and seven assists on efficient shooting. Duren finished with 14 points in about 20 minutes, flashing improved footwork, including a post spin into a fadeaway, but he also committed six turnovers, a reminder that the polish is still a work in progress.
Ausar Thompson added 12 points, three rebounds and four assists, Collins had 12 points and eight rebounds, and rookie Ebuka Okorie scored 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting in just nine minutes. The Pistons finished the preseason 3-1.
Questions Still Hanging Over Detroit
Turnovers: Duren's six giveaways against Toronto are something Boston's active defenders will try to exploit.
Shooting: Robinson, Isaiah Joe and Collins all shot better than 40 percent from three-point range last season, and Detroit needs that spacing to keep the floor open for Duren and Cunningham.
Depth: Okorie's early flashes give the coaching staff another option off the bench, but his role is still to be determined.
Celtics Arrive With Jayson Tatum Rolling
Boston is coming to Detroit with momentum. On Oct. 14, the Celtics beat the Charlotte Hornets 114-93 at TD Garden to improve to 3-0 in the preseason. Jayson Tatum led all players with 19 points and eight rebounds, plus six assists and two steals in 29 minutes, and scored 11 of those points in the first quarter.
Reserves made the difference late. Luka Garza checked in with Boston up eight in the fourth quarter and sparked a 22-9 closing run, while Neemias Queta scored 16 points and Garza added 14. Payton Pritchard handed out 11 assists without a turnover, and the Celtics held a 56-20 edge in paint points. Head coach Joe Mazzulla also praised newcomer Mitchell Robinson, saying, "Mitch is one of the smartest players I've been around."
Preseason results come with a caveat, since starters play limited minutes and schemes stay simple. Still, Tatum's sharp start and Boston's defensive disruption are exactly the type of ingredients that make Tuesday's opener so intriguing.
Opening Night Tripleheader: Banner, Debuts and a Rematch
The NBA's season-opening tripleheader on NBC and Peacock gives fans three headline games on the first night:
3 p.m. ET: Celtics at Pistons, a matchup of the Eastern Conference's top two teams from last season.
7 p.m. ET: 76ers at Knicks, as the defending champion Knicks raise their 2025-26 title banner while LeBron James and Jaylen Brown make their Philadelphia debuts.
9:30 p.m. ET: Thunder and Spurs in San Antonio, a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
The action keeps rolling on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when Giannis Antetokounmpo makes his Miami Heat debut against the Timberwolves in LaMelo Ball's first game with Minnesota, followed by Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors visiting Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Injuries Already Reshaping the 2026-27 Picture
Brandon Ingram Delayed in Los Angeles
On Sept. 28, the Clippers announced that doctors found a partially torn Achilles tendon during Brandon Ingram's heel surgery, and he will miss the start of the season. His absence leaves a hole in Los Angeles' scoring plans early on.
Ariel Hukporti Lost for the Year in Philadelphia
The 76ers took a hard hit in their preseason opener against the Knicks, when backup center Ariel Hukporti suffered a season-ending torn right Achilles, confirmed by MRI. It thins Philadelphia's frontcourt depth behind Joel Embiid.
Drew Eubanks Out in New York
On Thursday, Oct. 15, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Knicks center Drew Eubanks tore a pectoral muscle and would miss an extended period. New York waived him, and the team also released Tony Bradley and Ochai Agbaji, clearing the way for James Wiseman, who had been viewed as the frontrunner, to compete for the final roster spot at center.
What Fans Should Watch Next
With the preseason over, the real tests begin. Keep an eye on these storylines as the 2026-27 season gets underway:
Jalen Duren's workload: Can he carry his efficiency into 30-plus minutes against Boston's physical front line while cutting down turnovers?
Cunningham versus Tatum: The two stars headline the opener, and the early scoring battle could set the tone for the East race.
The Knicks' banner night: How the champions respond to the ceremony and the Sixers' new-look lineup will say plenty about title-defense hopes.
Injury updates: Ingram's recovery timeline and Philadelphia's center rotation are worth monitoring all month.
Duren's preseason debut showed what Detroit is paying for: rim pressure, finishing and chemistry with Cunningham. Whether it all holds up against a Boston team that knows how to defend is the first big question of the new season, and it gets answered Tuesday afternoon.
