More than 5,000 volunteers joined Hawks players and community leaders at State Farm Arena for the sixth Million Meal Pack

The Atlanta Hawks and State Farm brought thousands of Atlantans together at State Farm Arena to help families facing food insecurity. At the sixth Million Meal Pack, more than 5,000 volunteers assembled 1,002,402 meals for distribution across metro Atlanta.

Hawks players Kingston Flemings, Asa Newell, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Jalen Wilson worked alongside volunteers on the arena floor. Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins joined them, along with Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Atlanta City Council President Marci Overstreet, Councilmember Matt Westmoreland and Atlanta artist Pastor Troy.

Families, students, churches, businesses and community groups packed meals together. By the end of the event, volunteers had prepared 167,067 meal bags and more than 128,000 pounds of food.

With operational support from U.S. Hunger, the meals will benefit local partners including the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Hosea Helps, Midwest Food Bank, the Salvation Army of Metro Atlanta and Sweetwater Mission.

The need remains urgent. According to figures cited by the Atlanta Community Food Bank in the Hawks’ announcement, one in eight Georgians faces food insecurity, including one in six children in its service area.

“Seeing thousands of people come together at State Farm Arena to serve our neighbors is a powerful reminder of what this community can accomplish,” Hawks and State Farm Arena CEO Steve Koonin said in the team’s release. Across six Million Meal Pack events, the Hawks and State Farm say volunteers have now packed more than 6.1 million meals.

A Community Event With a Sustainability Goal

The Hawks say this was the fifth Million Meal Pack held at State Farm Arena under zero waste conditions, with more than 90% of event materials diverted from landfills. That includes the cardboard boxes used during meal packing.

The Hawks’ Work Beyond Basketball

The Million Meal Pack is part of the Hawks’ broader community work. Since beginning their partnership in 2018, the Hawks and State Farm have opened 12 Good Neighbor Clubs around metro Atlanta and supported programs focused on youth and community wellness.

One day at the arena cannot solve hunger across the region, but more than a million packed meals are now headed toward neighbors who need them.
