Atlanta Hawks Acquire Dorian Finney-Smith in Trade With Charlotte Hornets
Atlanta sends Buddy Hield, Ryan Nembhard and cash considerations to Charlotte for the veteran forward.
The Atlanta Hawks have acquired Dorian Finney-Smith from the Charlotte Hornets, sending Buddy Hield, Ryan Nembhard and cash considerations to Charlotte, the team announced September 22.
The move adds an experienced forward to Atlanta’s roster ahead of the 2026–27 season. Finney-Smith is entering his 11th NBA season and has played in 628 regular-season games, starting 445 of them.
Finney-Smith has averaged 8.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 27.3 minutes per game over his NBA career. He has played for the Dallas Mavericks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets.
His career totals also tell the story of his staying power. According to the Hawks, Finney-Smith is one of only four undrafted players in NBA history to record at least 5,000 points, 2,500 rebounds, 800 assists and 900 three-pointers. He has reached 5,032 points, 2,765 rebounds, 887 assists and 947 made threes.
Charlotte acquired Finney-Smith from Houston in July. He appeared in 37 games for the Rockets during the 2025–26 season, making one start.
Finney-Smith has played in 44 postseason games across six playoff runs, starting 36 of those contests. He has averaged 9.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 33.4 minutes per playoff game.
The Hawks’ release lists his career playoff three-point percentage at 40.1%. That postseason experience and perimeter shooting give Atlanta another option when games tighten and rotations shorten.
What Atlanta Sent to Charlotte
Buddy Hield and Ryan Nembhard head to the Hornets as part of the deal. Hield joined the Hawks in February 2026 from Golden State in the trade that also brought Jonathan Kuminga to Atlanta for Kristaps Porzingis. Atlanta acquired Nembhard from Dallas in a three-team transaction in July 2026.
The deal also includes cash considerations going to Charlotte. The Hawks did not specify the amount in their announcement.
A Veteran Addition for the Hawks
Finney-Smith took an uncommon route to a long NBA career. The Portsmouth, Virginia, native played college basketball at Virginia Tech and Florida before entering the league undrafted.
Now, after more than 600 NBA games and multiple playoff runs, he brings that experience to Atlanta.
For Hawks fans, the next question is how Finney-Smith fits into the team’s rotation when the new season begins. His experience and playoff shooting give Atlanta another piece to work with as it shapes its lineup.
